A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake rocked Myanmar and Thailand on Friday, toppling buildings—including a high-rise in Bangkok—and plunging communities into chaos.
SmartAID, which has operated during the past year aiding displaced people along the Myanmar-Thailand border, has immediately moved into action on the ground as well as calling for public support.
The quake’s epicenter struck just 16 km north-northwest of Sagaing in Myanmar, matching catastrophe that impacted the Turkey-Syria quake two years ago.
Emergency declarations by government officials now span 16 Myanmar regions, while Thailand’s capital struggles to respond. Myanmar, its infrastructure already battered by poverty and civil war, faces a worsening situation—families trapped, communities cut off, and aftershocks still rumbling.
“When I think of the families buried under rubble, the kids who’ve lost everything in a heartbeat it breaks me. We’re here because Myanmar and Thailand are already dealing with internally displaced for years, and this quake just deepened the crisis. SmartAID isn’t just about technology or rescue; it’s about giving people tools to survive. We’ve been with these communities for over a year, and we can’t turn away now—not when they need us most.” says Shachar Zahavi, Founding Director of SmartAID
SmartAID is deploying a Search & Rescue Team to join its local first responder partners to help survivors, while working on setting up a technological hub to coordinate relief efforts. Solar power systems to bring light and connectivity to families and shelters, Wi-Fi to connect between first responders and affected communities, and clean water units to prevent disease outbreaks.
Teaming up with local government and non government partners, as well as local leadership in the affected communities, SmartAID is working to transform desperation into resilience.
With our local partners we urge our supporters to join this urgent response —donations can be made at our donation button , for more details please contact: szahavi@smartaid.org
